The Ilm District in the Thuringian Forest

The Ilm district stretches from the doors of Erfurt - the capital of the Land - along the Rennsteig into the natural preserve of the Thuringian Forest. It is one of the Central German economic, science and tourist centres that are richest in tradition.

Being the "Green Heart of Germany" is true for the Ilm district as well. It is among the most densely wooded Thuringian districts having extensive hunting grounds, varying low mountain ranges with beautiful mixed and coniferous woodlands, large plateaus and narrow valleys as well as interesting nature reserves. Enjoy the high standards of living, leisure and recreation in this part of the natural preserve of the Thuringian Forest.

Here you will also find the highest mountains of the Thuringian Forest - the Großer Beerberg with 982 m above sea level and the Schneekopf at 978 m. A large variety of hiking regions, cycle tracks, castles and remarkable lookouts invite you as well as an attractive offer of inns and places to stay.
